In May 2016 Ben and Jacquie helped various people from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award achieve their Diamond Challenge. The challenge was for dignitaries from DofE to replicate a Gold expedition by foot and canoe so we set off to the Brecon Beacons for two days walking followed by two days canoeing along the River Wye. The participants were:
Jacqui Larcombe (Director of Fundraising at DofE)
Amanda Sanders (Senior Relationship Manager at DofE)
Peter Westgarth (CEO of DofE)
Brian Westgarth (Peters brother)
David Hempleman-Adams (Arctic explorer and DofE trustee)
Archie Bakewell-Millar (Prince Phillip’s Private Secretary)
Lord Kirkham (Chair of Trustees for DofE)
The two days walking were particularly challenging with some excellent routes across the Brecons. Then came the two days canoeing, briefly interrupted with a visit to the beautiful home of Linda Bennett (founder of LK Bennett Clothing) on the banks of the Wye. We followed a regular Gold route over two days from Hay on Wye down to Hereford. All went well until Peter and Brian capsized at the bottom of one of the short rapids!
